TURLEUM Twirlstars are encouraging anyone interested in baton twirling to get along to Crieff Community Campus on a Friday evening at 6pm.
Run by mother and daughter Morag and Sarah Stobbie, the club offers youngsters the chance to keep fit, improve their hand/eye co-ordination and learn teamwork.
There are clubs at Bridge of Earn, Kinross and Crieff where members train for displays and competitions.
“Competitions are not compulsory,” said Morag, “but they give members something to work towards.
“Some competitions have a team option, where Sarah tries to include every girl or boy in a team routine.
“Putting together these routines takes a lot of hard work both for Sarah and the team so regular attendance is essential.
“At the monthly competitions girls and boys are graded according to their ability and they gradually move up from novice through to grade 3.
“Baton twirling is a sport with exciting possibilities for those who wish to pursue them.”
Sarah (31) has been competing since she was five and is a member of the Scottish squad, the Northern Lights, along with Crieff Twirlstars Beth Douglas, Cherrisse Anderson and Lindsay O’Keeffe and seven members of the Kinross section.
In 2005, five Turleum Twirlstars represented Scotland in Slovenia and in 2007 some of the team took part in the British Open.
This year three girls will compete at the European Championships in Sheffield.
