THE colour could soon be back in Auchterarder if an appeal to form a “bloom” association proves successful.
Unlike other towns and villages in the Strath, the Lang Toon has not had a bloom committee for around 10 years and, according to locals, residents have missed the many floral displays that used to line the streets during the summer months.
However, despite support for the idea not enough people are coming forward to form a committee to get the ball rolling.
At a recent meeting, there was strong support for the idea, with Perth and Kinross Council’s environmental initiatives officer and Auchterarder and District Community Council pledging to support the establishment of a bloom association but the committment of more residents is required.
Community council representative David Homewood told the Herald: “There was a bloom committee about 10 years ago but unfortunately it fell apart.
“We are now looking for people willing to give their time and effort so that the new initiative can be taken forward.
“But, unless people grasp the nettle and offer their services, we can’t progress.
“Many, many people are in favour of the idea but no-one is coming forward to form a committee.”
He added that it is up to the public to make the idea work and turn Auchterarder into a competitor in the many bloom competitions throughout the year.
“The aim would be to form a management committee from members of the association but this can only be achieved if residents and businesses in the town volunteer to participate.
“Establishing a bloom association and management committee should result in brightening the town with colour during the summer months with more hanging baskets and tubs of flowers than has been the case in recent years.”
