Sturgeon orders study on ECMO unit

Scotland could get its own unit with specialist machines to treat critically ill swine flu patients.

Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon has ordered an expert group be set up to consider how to establish a centre for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) treatment, where oxygen is given to patients whose heart or lungs do not function properly.

It comes a day after it emerged that a critically ill swine flu patient from Lanarkshire had to travel to Leicester for this treatment.
