FOR many years David had puzzled over Crieff's layout. As his research and knowledge grew he discovered that not only has Crieff been built on very specific ley lines but it has also been laid out based on some clearly defined Masonic symbols.
He explained: "Crieff is a strange town. My research has led me to realise that the triangle of roads making up King Street, Burrell Street and Lodge Street/West High Street form part of a six-pointed star pattern — the most powerful of all Masonic symbols.
"I believe that the key for the layout of Crieff can be found in this symbol. James Square lies at the top right of the star segment. The square, of course, is a well-known Masonic symbol.
“The eight-sided Burrell Square, originally called The Octagon, lies to the west and is also a very powerful Masonic sign. So important, in fact, that the Freemasons in America adopted this plan for their primary museum.
“To add weight to my theory, the junction between Burrell Street and King Street is at an angle of 24 degrees, which took me some time to understand.
“The Freemasons always hid their symbols and knowledge so that the general public — 'the profane' — could not understand them. This number is symbolic of another of the most important Masonic symbols, the 24-inch gauge or ruler.
“Having researched the ley lines of this area for so long, it was a simple matter for me to use my divining rods to walk up Burrell Street, following the ley line that runs its length, noting that St Ninian’s Church had been carefully placed at its top end, and further on to Balnaguard standing stone to the north-west. Then in the opposite direction, to the south-west, to a standing stone at Concraig Farm near the Muthill to Crieff Road."
David also eventually discovered that this ley line emitted from the volcanic plug of Stirling Castle, an ancient seat of the kings. When he followed the King Street ley to the north-east it passed through the Druids' stone circle at Crieff Golf Course (this is also placed on a fault, where the conglomerates of the Knock butt against the mica schist of the rest of Strathearn) and on to Tullybelton stone circle to the north-west of Perth.
Extending this to the south, past Dalchirla standing stone, revealed the source: Dumbarton Castle, another ancient seat of the kings and volcanic plug. David said: "No wonder it has been called King Street!"
He further investigated the other points on the star, walking down Lodge Street into the hills above Comrie to the stone circle at Braefordie, situated on top of a volcanic pluton, a volcano which never quite erupted.
In the opposite direction, to the west, it travels along the High Street, through the town hall, clock and stocks, the Parish Church in Church Street and on to a standing stone at Aberuthven, terminating at Dunning Church and burial ground.
David thinks that the Freemasons built their own system of energies on top of that created by our Stone Age ancestors.
The centre of the circle must, of course, be very powerful so what lies at the centre? Well it is, in fact, St Michael’s Church in Strathearn Terrace.
Saint Michael was the dragon-slaying saint and he is said to have pierced the ground with his sword to create the omphalos (central point) of an area.
David said there are at least two major cities in the United Kingdom which have been built to esoteric designs: Glasgow and London. The omphalos of Glasgow is said to be its cathedral.
“This discovery about Crieff is not giving any secrets away and can only add to the Masons' lost knowledge”, added David, who is convinced that even the members of the highest degrees in Freemasonry — there are 33 of them — are unaware of this work.
He believes that the discovery that Crieff is such a special place can only benefit its inhabitants by revealing to the world, and especially Freemasons everywhere, its special esoteric plan and perhaps lead to an understanding of the ancient energies from volcanic plugs, standing stones and circles which irradiate the town through sacred sites still in use today.
