Strathearn Post Letters: Disgusted at Tesco planning decision

This decision, I feel, was made long before last Wednesday’s meeting. The report they made their decision on did not even mention the offer that Sainsbury’s had made to them, which was reported in the press some weeks before. This meant Sainsbury’s would effectively take care of all the contamination, road improvements, landscaping and maintenance, and, of course the provision of enhanced sporting facilities. They had not only reduced the size of the store in order to gift back half of the Market Park in a state in which people, both able bodied and disabled would be able to use and enjoy, but they had the store re-positioned in the plans in order to make it as unobtrusive as possible. It would be an eco store, which Sainsbury’s have been building for some time, without beating their chests about it to Perth & Kinross Council.

Numerous schools throughout Perth and Kinross, including Perth Academy, Crieff Primary School and Comrie Primary School had their heating on full blast throughout the summer holidays. Yes, you did read that correctly, the heating was on in empty schools during the seven weeks of summer holiday. Apparently it can’t be turned off as it is centrally controlled by the council.

My family was the last to work at and live at Highlandman Station before it closed in 1964. My mother (Gladys) was the crossing keeper, while my father (Will) was a signalman at Crieff for several years along with colleagues Willie Elder and Peter Comrie.
